Dear Parents & Carers,
We are getting very excited about the possibilities of so many planned events in which we can involve you. This really feels like we are very much back to pre-Covid times and fingers crossed that we will remain as such throughout this summer term, although we will still all need to be vigilant with cleaning, hand-washing, and ventilation – we are looking forward to some warmer weather as classrooms have been quite cold this week! Face masks are no longer necessary but we have kept this as a personal choice for staff and children, so this will remain.
At present, we are liaising with our Infants to plan a Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Picnic on the field (weather permitting) from midday on Thursday 26th May (the last day before half term) with events for our Oaklands’ families to share which will be a lovely end to this half term. More details will follow in a joint letter as soon as we have a programme of events, so please keep that afternoon free if possible and be aware that you may want to join us for a picnic (your own or ordered from our kitchen). Details to follow soon.
Breaktime Snacks
We are finding that there are lots of different unhealthy snacks creeping into school and this is not appropriate. Please may we remind you (and children will be reminded in class and in assembly) that a snack at breaktime may only be something healthy. We encourage the children to bring in fruit or vegetables as a mid-morning snack if they would like to. Pre-packaged snacks such as crisps, sweets or cereal bars are not allowed. Likewise, anything involving nuts is banned at any time of the day (break or lunchtimes) for the obvious reasons of severe nut allergies in school for staff and children. Thank you for your support.
Daisy Trophy
Congratulations to Ayaan in 6A who received this award from Mrs Alexander in a whole school assembly just before Easter. Well deserved Ayaan and apologies that this did not make the update before Easter when I was off with Covid!
This is a treasured award presented each half term in memory of Daisy Rogers who attended Oaklands Juniors some years ago. A special book is displayed near Reception containing the names of all the recipients, along with the words said by each teacher in a whole school assembly. A card containing these words, written in beautiful calligraphy, is then presented in a later assembly for the children to keep. Mrs Rogers will be coming into school (as she always does to meet Daisy Trophy recipients) and Ayaan will then sign this book in Reception.
Wishing you all a very good Bank Holiday weekend – see you all back in school on Tuesday 3rd May.
Kind regards,
Mrs Hazel West
Headteacher

Pedestrian Gate – Butler Road
All parents and carers are asked not to latch open the pedestrian gate when collecting children from clubs after school unless specifically asked to do so by a member of Oaklands staff. We all want to keep our children safe and if the gate is left open the site is not as secure as we would all like.
Mental Health Matters
OnLine Training (OLT) International (https://www.oltinternational.net/) provide training and information to support the team around the child. They currently offer two free courses which may be of interest to parents. Each takes about 5h, has flexible start dates and is completed online at your own pace.
‘Understanding ADHD’ aims to support parents and carers who have a child with an ADHD diagnosis or suspect their child has ADHD. It is packed full of useful information, often shared from the parent’s perspective, about how to best support your child’s developmental needs.
‘Autism for Parents’ supports parents and carers in understanding the characteristic traits and triggers associated with autism so they can build an informed and positive future for their child and family. With lots of authentic videos of parents talking about the issues that most concern them, this short course provides great insight into the ways you can look after yourself as well as support the developmental needs of your child.
Platinum Jubilee Celebrations
As previously communicated, Wokingham Without Parish Council are running a Platinum Jubilee Bunting Competition – enter by 13th May 2022 to win a prize. Templates can be downloaded via the following link along with further information: https://wokinghamwithout-pc.gov.uk/platinum-jubilee-bunting-design-competition
The completed bunting would be displayed around the Pinewood Centre over the Platinum Jubilee period. If there are enough entrants, it is hoped that the bunting would be stored and re-used at other celebrations in the future.
