And just like that, another year has flown by and we are saying goodbye to our Year 6 children, looking forward to welcoming a whole new group of children into Year 3 in September and eagerly anticipating a chance to refresh and recharge over the summer holidays.
Despite saying every year we need to manage how much we try and pack into the summer term, we still seem to have had a very busy time of it! There has been sports day, plenty of class trips, visitors in school, transition events, a Thinking Families afternoon and so much more. All these things can only happen with a committed and harmonious staff and a parent community willing to support us in attending or running events and ferrying children back and forth all over the area.

Sports Day itself was a great success and I would like to thank you for your patience while we tried to predict the weather. I’m glad we didn’t have it scheduled for later in the term, when the heat would have complicated matters. The winners on the day were Hamilton house, who followed this up with winning the field sports trophy as well, which was awarded this week.
Speaking of great successes, the inaugural Oakfest took place last weekend. I saw first-hand the huge amount of planning and preparation that went into organising it and a huge congratulations is owed to the PTA team for making it such a great event. Personally speaking, getting wet sponges thrown at me on a hot summer day was not such a trial. I would heartily recommend it should the weather be as fine next time. The funding the PTA raises is crucial in helping the school run effectively, from staffing to structures, and I am most grateful for their time and efforts.
Inevitably, there is a huge focus on our Year 6 children in their final half term at Oaklands and they have had plenty going on. This has included transition days at their new schools, the Year 6 barbecue (thank you the Griffiths family for running this again), play rehearsals and performances and the highlight for many, the annual trip to Legoland. It has been a joy to see this cohort develop in their time at Oaklands, where they will be missed, but they are well-prepared for the move to secondary school. Many will be understandably anxious but this is normal when things change and can be a positive learning experience.
We also will be saying goodbye to Miss Davidson and Mr Lenon at the end of term. Miss Davidson will be starting a well-earned retirement but we do hope to see her back in school to keep the belleplates tradition going. Mr Lenon should be congratulated on being awarded Qualified Teacher Status following his sterling work in the past year. His willingness to step in at short notice is much appreciated and I wish him the best of luck for the future.
Before I go, I would like to make you aware that, due to the significant changes in education in the 2026-27 year, especially those around SEND provision, we have been instructed to have an extra INSET day, which will be on Friday 12th February. This will be added to the calendar in due course.
It only remains for me to thank you all for your support, direction, suggestions and positivity over the last year, which has helped me manage the role of headteacher in interesting circumstances. Have an enjoyable summer but please do remember to help your child keep up their core skills by having high quality conversations, including listening, reading daily, practising key numbers facts but, most of all, by encouraging their natural curiosity in whatever happens to pique their interest.

Orienteering: On Friday 5th June, Mrs Alexander accompanied a group of children to Dinton Pastures Country Park where they took part in the Dinton Orienteering Experience. The children had a fantastic time and loved following the trail they had been set. Well done to Libby T, Poppy L, Rowan HK and Shane M who all received medals for completing the trail.
Kwik Cricket: During this half-term our team of cricketers has taken part in a total of 3 kwik cricket matches against other schools in the Wokingham area – Radstock Primary School; St Paul’s CofE Junior School and Aldryngton Primary School.
Despite being very keen, and some excellent individual batting and bowling performances, we unfortunately suffered three defeats. Nevertheless, the children showed great enthusiasm for the matches and always showed good teamwork and support for each other.

Flower Festival: A big thank you goes to Miss Davidson and Mr Hopley who together with a small group of children from Year 4 and Year 6, created our school’s Planet Earth exhibit which featured in the recent St John’s Flower Festival weekend.
