Are English and maths much harder than in Year 2?
All of the subjects will be a bit trickier than in Year 2, just like they were harder than in Year 1, but we will help you to adapt to the change.
How does the teacher get the class’s attention?
Different teachers have lots of different ways of getting your attention.
Do you always sit on tables?
Usually yes as there is not enough carpet space in our classrooms.
How hard is the change to being a Year 3?
Change can sometimes be hard but there are lots of adults to help you.
What is fun about Year 3?
We try to make all lessons enjoyable but the children tell us that they enjoy the books we read in English, going to the ICT suite, PE and art lessons as well as trips, cooking and special days.
Do you write stories in Year 3?
We do lots of different types of writing, including writing stories
What type of plates do you have at lunchtime?
The same as in the Infants.
What do you do on your first day?
We usually do some activities to get to know each other, help you settle in and get to know the classroom and school.
Do you have Casey’s Crew at playtime?
No, but we have a ‘Friendship bench’ and the Year 6s often organise games for the younger children.
Is it more tiring than Year 2?
As the work is a bit harder and you are learning lots of new things and all about your new school, it will probably be a bit more tiring at first but you will get used to it.
Do you put your hand up to ask to eat your pudding?
No, only to leave the hall once you have finished.
Do you have class helpers?
All classes in the Juniors have a full-time Teaching Assistant. Plus, there are other adults that help out around the school.
Do you celebrate world book day?
Definitely! We love dressing up in the Juniors!
How many lessons do you have in a day?
It varies from day to day but usually about 5, but there are lots of different activities happening throughout the day.
How long (in minutes) do you have at playtime?
15 minutes at breaktime and 70 minutes (1hour and 10 minutes) at lunchtime.
Do you have different classrooms for different subjects?
You are generally in the same classroom apart from PE and ICT and when we go to the library or do outdoor learning or cooking.
Do you use workbooks (exercise books) to do your work in?
Yes, but we also have folders to file some sheets in.
Do you put benches away after assembly (it’s a Year 2 job here in Infants)?
The Year 6s do this job in the Juniors.
Do you use pens for writing?
Yes, we will give you a pen and a pack with all the stationery that you need in it.
How do lunchtimes work?
We will explain more when you arrive, but you have a given time (that changes each week) and you are then called into the hall to eat your lunch.
How do you get sorted into the different houses?
If you have a brother or sister in the Juniors, we will put you into the same house. Otherwise, we just try to put a mix of boys and girls and children who enjoy sport.
Are the teachers strict?
Like the teachers at the Infants, we have rules and we expect you to follow them, but we can also be fun too!
Do you all go onto the field at the same time?
At lunchtime during the summer, yes, but not necessarily during the ‘Daily Mile’ or at other times.
Do you use computers to do your homework?
You can use computers if you want to for some of the tasks.
Can you sit wherever you want in class?
Usually no. The teachers will give you specific places.
Do you wear your PE kits all day when you do PE?
Yes.
Where are the toilets?
Right outside the Year 3 classrooms.
What are the four houses called?
Attenborough, Hamilton, Mercury and Nightingale.
What are your topics?
We don’t tend to have topics as each subject focuses on different things but in history we look at The Stone Age and The Ancient Egyptians, in geography we look at maps, the local area and climate.
When do you go home?
At 3:20, just a little bit later than the Infants.
